#Blog2BlogBC || The Longest Ride

Happy Friday!

Today’s post is the discussion of “The Longest Ride” for #Blog2BlogBC with Kelly. Let’s get started.

The Book

The Longest RideIra Levinson is in trouble. At ninety-one years old, in poor health and alone in the world, he finds himself stranded on an isolated embankment after a car crash. Suffering multiple injuries, he struggles to retain consciousness until a blurry image materializes and comes into focus beside him: his beloved wife Ruth, who passed away nine years ago. Urging him to hang on, she forces him to remain alert by recounting the stories of their lifetime together – how they met, the precious paintings they collected together, the dark days of WWII and its effect on them and their families. Ira knows that Ruth can’t possibly be in the car with him, but he clings to her words and his memories, reliving the sorrows and everyday joys that defined their marriage.

A few miles away, at a local rodeo, a Wake Forest College senior’s life is about to change. Recovering from a recent break-up, Sophia Danko meets a young cowboy named Luke, who bears little resemblance to the privileged frat boys she has encountered at school. Through Luke, Sophia is introduced to a world in which the stakes of survival and success, ruin and reward — even life and death – loom large in everyday life. As she and Luke fall in love, Sophia finds herself imagining a future far removed from her plans — a future that Luke has the power to rewrite . . . if the secret he’s keeping doesn’t destroy it first.

Ira and Ruth. Sophia and Luke. Two couples who have little in common, and who are separated by years and experience. Yet their lives will converge with unexpected poignancy, reminding us all that even the most difficult decisions can yield extraordinary journeys: beyond despair, beyond death, to the farthest reaches of the human heart.

My thoughts

I’ve been a fan of Nicholas Sparks forever. When Kelly and I decided we wanted to read this book, I was ready to drive in. This was by far my favorite book of his in a long time. The way that Sparks intertwines the characters is amazing. When I first started I was really confused, how everyone was going to be contacted. The suspense was killing me that I kept reading and before I knew it, the book was done. Sophia and Luke are such opposite of each other, that their relationship works. He’s a cowboy and she’s the farthest thing from it. One night changes the course of their life forever. You need to read this book.

Power. Money. Control. Love.

Driving until the road stops, he ends up on the remote and quaint Perry Island, where a heartthrob can blend in like the locals and be a beach bum as long as he wants. All that changes when Evan meets Haven Owen, aspiring songwriter and the girl he just can’t get enough of. A summer romance turns into something much deeper and Evan gets tangled in his own web of lies to keep Haven in his life. But when his ex tracks him down, Evan learns there are some things you just can’t outrun.

My thoughts:

Evan finds his girlfriend pictured with someone else, he decides that he needs to get away. He goes no where in particular. He ends up on Perry Island. Here, he tries to be incognito as Jay, an aspiring writer. His life changes when he meets Haven.

This was such a nice and easy love story to  read. It allowed me a chance to really get to know the characters. Overall, this was a great book!

This Much Is True

Both on the verge of fame. A ballerina who lies. A baseball player who believes her. Well, the truth changes everything.

Tally Landon is just trying to survive the death of her twin sister, graduate from high school, and escape her tragic story by pursuing her ballet career in New York. She doesn’t count on Lincoln Presley, Stanford’s baseball wonder, to affect her at all. Adding him to a long list of one-night stands is the plan. Lying to him about her age and name is her standard method of operandi. She doesn’t count on being found out, on seeing him again, or falling in love.

Lincoln Presley’s life is all mapped out for him. There is only baseball. With Major League Baseball circling their favorite prospect with a lucrative offer, he cannot afford to mess up. And, he doesn’t; until he meets up with the girl he saved in that burning wreckage on the 101 on Valentine’s Day months before. By the time he learns her real name and of all the lies she’s told, he’s in far too deep to ever really let her go.

Fate has a different set of plans, but when fame and lies tear them apart, one truth remains.

My thoughts:

Tally and her twin are in a car crash. Tally survives but her sister doesn’t. Lincoln recuses Tally but can’t ever find out how she is doing. A few months later, Tally and Lincoln meet again at a party. He remembers her but she doesn’t remember him. They hook up at the party and this is were their story begins.

Overall, Katherine made me experience all the feelings in this book. It’s not your typical story. It allows the reader to keep guessing. From page one you are hooked. Overall, it was a great read!

Author Bio

Katherine Owen writes contemporary edgy fiction, which translates to: she writes love stories that are contemporary in setting and both edgy and dark. Some readers term her books emotional roller coasters. With her writing, Owen admits she has a fondness for angst, likes to play with a little drama, and essentially toys around with the unintentional complications of love. She contends this began early on when she won a poetry contest at the age of fourteen and appears to be without end. Owen has an avid love of coffee, books, and writing, but not necessarily in that order. She writes both Contemporary Romance and New Adult fiction which includes her bestselling TRUTH IN LIES Series (a series despite despising ‘series’) beginning with This Much Is True and her latest release, The Truth About Air & Water. The TRUTH IN LIES series is fan-driven. So. There will be a third book about Linc and Tally released in 2015 titled Tell Me Something True.

About Owen’s fiction…This is NOT the light trope stuff. She travels a unique, writerly path and enjoys writing dark and angsty (a “non-word” she is fond of) emotional love stories. She often warns readers to be prepared with: time, tissues, wine, Advil or your drug of choice. And, as her most favored character, Lincoln Presley, would say, “do what you must, Princess.”

It’s Monday again! This little guy seems to always creep up on us. I was out of town all weekend so I’m trying to catch up on everything. Here is what I’m reading this Monday!

I'll Meet You There

If seventeen-year-old Skylar Evans were a typical Creek View girl, her future would involve a double-wide trailer, a baby on her hip, and the graveyard shift at Taco Bell. But after graduation, the only thing standing between straightedge Skylar and art school are three minimum-wage months of summer. Skylar can taste the freedom—that is, until her mother loses her job and everything starts coming apart. Torn between her dreams and the people she loves, Skylar realizes everything she’s ever worked for is on the line.

Nineteen-year-old Josh Mitchell had a different ticket out of Creek View: the Marines. But after his leg is blown off in Afghanistan, he returns home, a shell of the cocksure boy he used to be. What brings Skylar and Josh together is working at the Paradise—a quirky motel off California’s dusty Highway 99. Despite their differences, their shared isolation turns into an unexpected friendship and soon, something deeper.

*I’ve waited forever for this book to be released, now that it’s here, I can’t wait to dive right in*

AUTHOR BIO:
I am the author of BEAUTY, a YA retelling of the Snow White tale, and ALWAYS, FOREVER, a YA retelling of Daphne du Maurier’s REBECCA. ALWAYS, FOREVER was originally published in hardcover as THORN ABBEY.

I’ve also contributed to several celebrity novels, including a New York Times-bestselling YA trilogy.

I’m currently hard at work on my next YA novel, which will be as mind-bending as ALWAYS, FOREVER (I hope!).

My favorite cures for writers’ block are long walks, long showers, popcorn, chocolate, and really expensive coffee. I talk to myself a lot while I write (you know, to make sure the dialogue zings).

Questions you ask Yourself Part 2

Back in September, I came across this idea from a good blogging friend; Questions to ask yourself. It’s been a hot minute since I’ve done part one that I figured it was time to continue with part two. Here goes nothing.
11} How many minutes do you look at your phone each day?
This is such a tough question to answer. My phone is constantly by my side. Every so often I tend to look down at it to make sure I didn’t miss anything. It’s the only way that anyone outside of work can get ahold of me.
12} Do you call your parents for no reason?
I try to call my parents every day. Most of the time it tends to be every other day. My sister, on the other hand, I talk to her about three times a day.
13} Do you know the story of how your parents met?
I actually do. They met at a mutual friend’s wedding. They were juniors in high school. This month, they will be celebrating their 34th (33rd maybe) wedding anniversary.

Here they are at my wedding about four years ago!

14} What do you miss when you are on vacation?
One of the biggest thing I miss is the pup. We’ve been doing a better job at planning on vacations where we can bring her. But sometimes it’s hard. Not everyone wants to play with 60-lb goldendoodle.

Look how cute she is!

15} What is the world of your childhood?
This is such a tough question to answer. I’m going to go with soccer. Soccer has been a huge part of my life since I can remember. Nearly every weekend, my parents and I were out on the soccer field at some game. Most of my vacations growing up were travelling to different soccer fields throughout the state.
16} When was the last time you played a game?
On Valentine’s day. This year, we decided we wanted to keep it low-key. So I made dinner and we played some board games.
17} Do you think more about your past or your future?
At this very moment, neither. I’m thinking about present. I can’t change the past so there is no need to think about it. The future is so unknown that I don’t want to think about it for fear of having an anxiety attack. I’m really learning to live in the moment. And only worry about life one minute at a time.
18} In which language would you like to be fluent?
French or Italian.
19} Do you try not to look like a tourist when you are on vacation?
I try really hard to not be a tourist but it’s so hard. I get excited about the littlest things. I love taking pictures, which makes you the ultimate tourist.
20} Do you like yourself better when you are drunk?
There is no good way to answer this. So I’m not.

30 by 30 Part III

How I spent my sick days.

My cold has finally gone away. That bugger was here for two weeks. It doesn’t help that I’m coaching soccer four days a week and playing one day. Needless to say, my body was having a tough time recovering. Oh well. I’m me again!

Awhile ago I started my 30 before 30 lists. 30 things I wanted to do before I turn 30. It’s time to conclude that list.

For a refresher here is Part I and Part II

21.) Attend a blogger meetup

Blogging allows me to learn about the lives of people all around the world. In March, a few of us are getting together for the PNW Bloggers. I’m excited to meet people that are local and share the same passion.

22.) Hit 500 followers

I’ve been blogging for about two years now and I want to get to 500 followers. I want my messages and recommendations to reach across the world.

23.) Purge the entire of my closet

I’m the first to admit when it comes to clothes, etc I am a hoarder. Over the last couple of years, I’ve discovered that I only wear about a third of my closet. I really want to get my closet down to just one dresser full of clothes.

24.) Learn better photography skills

Thanks to the wonders of the smart phone, everything thinks they are a photographer. I know I’m not a photographer at all. I really want to get better skills for when my kids eventually come, I can do my own pictures without shelling out hundreds of dollars.

25.) Get my master’s degree in something

I would love to get my master’s in something. Whether it be in teaching, business administration, or library studies. I want to go back to school to learn.

26.) Read one book based in every state

One of my friend’s posted the other day, how she was wanting to read a book based in all 50 states. I thought it was a great idea!

27.) Learn another language

My in-laws can all speak French. I’ve always had this desire to learn another language. Maybe my brother-in-law can put his French degree to use and teach me.

28.) Have one date night a month for a year

You should never stop dating your spouse. I want to make one night a month, where we get dressed up fancy and go on a date.

29.) See a ballet

I’ve seen musicals and plays but never a ballet.

30.) See a Broadway show in New York

It should be on everyone’s list to see a Broadway play on Broadway.

And there you have it. My 30 before 30 list.

What are some things on your bucket list.

Book Review || Me Tarzan — You Jane

Me Tarzan -- You Jane

Moving on doesn’t always have to mean goodbye.

Widowed makeup artist Jane Sullivan is more comfortable keeping her husband’s memory alive than dating a pool full of sharks. Ella, her 4 year-old daughter, is her whole world.

When Jane meets Lucas Oliver, famous cover model, it’s hate at first sight. His playboy persona rubs her the wrong way.

Accustomed to every woman fawning over him, Lucas is drawn to the shy, uncompromising single mom and completely melts at the sight of Ella. He is determined to convince Jane that sometimes a second chance can mend a broken heart

Goodreads

My thoughts:

Jane is a widowed makeup artist who wants to become a writer. Lucas is the typical playboy model. The kind that every girl loves in love with instantly. When they first met at a writer’s conference, there attraction is anything but love. Jane devises everything about Lucas including his loud parties next door to her hotel room. Flash forward to a few weeks later and they are forced together in Paris by a mutual friend. They both finally let their guards down. Jane learns that second chances can exist. Lucas realizes he needs Jane and Ella in his life. Once they arrive back to the States, a scandal causes Jane to question everything about Lucas. Are they able to with stand anything?

This book was quite interesting. It took a little bit of time for me to get into it. But once I did, it was enjoyable. Throughout the entire book I was cheering for that happy ever after. The characters of Jane and Lucas were rather intriguing. Lucas is your typical male model, who thinks everyone must love him. When he finally encounters someone that doesn’t, he is thrown off guard. Jane, on the other hand, isn’t your typical female character. She is a widow who believes that people can only love one person for their whole lives. She’s comfortable keeping her husband’s memory alive then finding someone else to love. She is the complete opposite of Lucas. However, when Lucas goes through a death, she is exactly what he needed.

The main reason this book isn’t rated higher is the transition throughout the book. One minute they are talking about travelling back to Paris and the next page, it’s already happen. There were a few questions that were left unanswered about current plot points that would have made sense with something else added. Overall, this was an enjoyable book.
